Along with Spring (yes its coming) comes thoughts of crisp, fresh air, newly budding flowers, singing birds and a sense of renewal. Getting organized and doing a bit of spring organizing and cleaning, helps to bring that wonderful fresh feeling into your home and office.
1. ASSIGN YOURSELF A DIFFERENT TASK FOR EACH DAY.
Make yourself a schedule that is comprised of one hour and one task each day. Your schedule may look something like this:
Monday: De-cluttering
Tuesday: Dusting
Wednesday: Vacuuming
Thursday: Scrubbing
Friday: Organizing and Rearranging
Saturday: Laundering
Sunday: Decorating
Spend one hour each day doing your assigned task for each room, throughout your house. You’ll be amazed at the difference you can make in your home by following this simple system.
2. SORT OUT YOUR PAPERS
What Spring experience is even less fun than stepping in a deceptively shallow puddle? Taxes! But since you have to sort through your finances before April 15th, you might as well organize the rest of your papers while you’re at it.
3. CLEAN OUT YOUR WALLET AND PURSE
Many people collect receipts in their wallets or purses. Get rid of all the unnecessary receipts and take care of those items that need your attention now instead of later. You’ll probably find that once you get in the habit of cleaning out your wallet or purse, you’ll learn to use it as a convenient place to put stuff that you know you’ll need to look at again soon rather than using it as a general junk collector.
4. CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET
Spring is as good a time as any to de-clutter your closet. As always, you’ll want to evaluate all the clothes and accessories in your closet and ask yourself what works for your wardrobe and what’s just taking up space. First, if you have any winter clothes that didn’t get to leave the closet, is that because they didn’t fit, weren’t warm enough, or you simply don’t like them anymore? If so, maybe it’s time to give them away. Next, look at your summer clothes. Are you looking forward to wearing them again when it gets warmer? If not, donate them. After you’ve removed the items you don’t want, make sure what’s left is hanging neatly so you can see and access what you have.
DONATE OR SELL THE THINGS YOU DON’T USE. If you have items that you don’t use, but are in good condition, they are prime candidates to sell or donate. Gather all of these items together in boxes or plastic bags.
Then, decide whether you would prefer to donate them or sell them.
5. OTHER SMALL PROJECTS
6. KEEP THE ULTIMATE GOAL IN MIND
Getting and staying organized requires some commitment on your part, but the payoff is enormous. Your stress level will be reduced, you’ll feel better and more comfortable in your home, you’ll feel eager to have guests over more frequently, and you may even save money as well (I’ve had many clients repeatedly buy the same item over and over simply because they had given up on trying to find it amidst the clutter!)
